Winners 2012

CyEC 2012 First Prize 10000 Euros: Elevate me Promotions LTD

Elevate-Me Promotions Ltd was founded in 2011, aiming to bring to the Cypriot market the concept of elevator advertising. Elevate-Me offers ideal advertising spaces within special snap-frames, installed inside the elevators of large buildings, which constitute our advertising network. Each building earns a commission for every ad message displayed in its frame. Recently, an elevator floor transformation feature was also launched. This implies a laminated 3D printed graphic installed on the elevator floor of the buildings with the highest traffic. Our partner network currently consists of 135 buildings, reaching 65,000 unique viewers per month and generating more than 850,000 impressions. The network consists of residential, business, recreational, student and medical buildings. The messages can reach a captive and targeted audience, delivered in a focused environment with no distractions from external stimuli. Audiences can be targeted using various preferences such as age, gender, geographic location, marital or employment status, and many more. Advertisers may target flat renters/owners, tenants with pets, focus on university students or pensioners, or even select buildings in which specific businesses operate, such as lawyers, dentists, beauticians etc. A proprietary advertising management software gives the ability to hold analytic demographic and social information about the people residing or employed in the buildings. By targeting the customers’ most desired audiences, we ensure cost effectiveness and elimination of waste of their advertising money. We have already expanded in Greece, looking into the UK and other EU countries. The company is in the process of installing LCD displays in its network’s landmark business buildings. Advertisers will be able to update their digital content many times throughout the day remotely, through the Internet, and pay on a cost per view basis. Apart from the advertising messages, live content update will be provided such as building navigation info, stock exchange news or weather forecasts, in order to augment the riders' experience.

CyEC 2012 Second Prize 5000 Euros: Building with Earth

Omoplintos Ltd will be manufacturing building materials, including compressed earth blocks (CEB: an improved version of the traditional adobe due to compression), rammed earth walls (RE) and natural earth plasters. It will be founded by a group of highly educated and experienced people from the sectors of architecture, construction and management consulting. It thus will offer a wide range of services and products from design to final delivery of buildings, with a specialization in earthen architecture and accompanying technologies. Production will be flexible, as it is composed of a simple line of machines, that can be easily towed to each construction site and produce the materials from the very earth taken out during the excavation of the site. This allows for really cost effective but also sustainable (in terms of the ecological footprint of the buildings) building materials produced with modern procedures and methods while at the same time remaining attractively traditional. Customers will have the option to take part in the construction process themselves, starting out with flexible training facilitated by the company. In this way the building material will cost them much less and they their own time is directly turned into value thus cutting down on cash needed.

CyEC 2012 Third Prize 3500 Euros: CySilicoTech Research Ltd

Water is essential for life. Each year, two million people die from waterborne disease, such as. diarrhoea, cholera, dysentery and billions more suffer illness – most are children under the age of five. But much of this ill-health and suffering is preventable. At CySilicoTech Research Ltd, it is our dream to provide a simple water disinfection and purification technology to low-income countries, which utilizes solar-UV energy. Through intensive research over the last year we have accumulated the necessary fundamental knowledge and built an inexpensive prototype that can purify drinking water for communities that lack electricity, but can also be applied to any water tank that has the potential of microbiological growth. Our proof-of-principle prototype can clean 60L of drinking water on a sunny day which is the average daily consumption of 35 people. We are currently in the process of acquiring a patent for this technology in order to obtain capital fund. At CySilicoTech it is our believe that we can help through technological innovation other people that may not be as lucky as we are.

CyEC 2012 Honorary Mention Prize 500 Euros: Telexetasis

Open & Distance Learning (ODL) is one of the fastest growing areas in Education. Nevertheless, accredited exams of online courses are still mostly paper-based and take place on campus. This weakness relates to the inability of Higher-Education Institutes (HEIs) to deal effectively with unethical conduct and potential security threats present in a non-supervised, online test enviroment. Whereas Universities have attempted to tackle the issue by adopting alternative proctoring styles, all current solutions have various disadvantages. Telexetasis will be the first multi-modal biometric system that will allow HEIs to conduct reliable e-Exams. The system will: be fully-automated; use image data, sound, and keyboard dynamics; provide verification of the examinee’s identity for the entire duration of an exam; use readily available computing devices. Our system will be beneficial for students and HEIs alike, as it will offer high reliability & convenience, and save both money and time. It will be easy to use and will respect the students’ privacy. Telexetasis will be a top-notch product and will make a valuable contribution to the ODL of tomorrow.
